SMARTPHONESQuirky but Useful Gifts: Rob Enderle's 2018 Personal Tech Product Guide
December 3, 2018This is the time of year for a product guide. I'm a big fan of products most people don't have that solve a specific work problem, as well as those that could make your life easier, more comfortable or more fun. I like to give gifts that people actually would use. In some cases, due to the cost, these may be things you'd buy only for yourself, a spouse, or a relative you really want to impress.Tesla vs. Jaguar: The First Real Electric Car Track Shootout

All ten phones are excellent and certain aspects make each a possible contender for the top spot. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 sat at the top of my list for the last few months. After using a Mate 20 Pro for the last couple of weeks, I'm bumping it back to the top for this last ranking of 2018.

The top four are very expensive phones and price was a consideration for number five that trumped some other features it is missing. It's easy to find a great phone today and to be honest today's phones are so good you really don't need to be replacing them on an annual basis.Must read: Huawei Mate 20 and 20 Pro unveiled: More AI, better cameras, wireless charging1. Asus seems to have taken a leaf out of Xiaomi's book. There is no other way to describe the strategy Asus has adopted while launching its new smartphones. An aggressive approach with the price and specifications of the ZenFone Max Pro M1₹ 9,999 helped Asus grab everyone's attention in the budget segment at the beginning of this year. Now, for its successor, the company has taken the same formula but made it spicier. Asus has opted for the more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor, and with prices starting at Rs. 12,999, the new ZenFone Max Pro M2 does look like a very good deal. Nokia 8.1

Nokia 8.1 ReviewNokia 8.1 price in India is Rs. 26,999HIGHLIGHTS The Nokia 8.1 has a 6.18-inch display with a notch, and a 3500mAh battery

This is an Android One phone that's already running Android 9.0 Pie

It uses the new octa-core Snapdragon 710 SoC and has 4GB of RAM

As if HMD Global's number-and-decimal model hierarchy wasn't confusing enough, there has been a course correction with the Nokia 8.1. This phone is not in any way meant to be superior to last year's flagship Nokia 8 or the Nokia 8 Sirocco — from now on, flagship models will almost certainly make up a new 9-series tier. Instead, the new Nokia 8.1 is a premium model for those who don't want to spend flagship-level money. Sure enough, there is a fairly wide gap in the market right now because thanks to relentless price wars, we now have a lot of sub-Rs. 20,000 phones with features that were considered impossible to find at that level just about a year ago. However, the prices of premium phones have been co…
